Raumati Pool has closed after more than 50 years' service.
The open air, salt water baths opened in 1962 to provide swimming facilities for a population of around 5,000 but by the early 1970s it was obvious the baths were not suited for all-year swimming.
Raumati Pool has quite a history. At one stage it was closed while activities moved to other pools including Cannon's Creek in Porirua. This was not satisfactory for Kāpiti residents so fundraising begun for a new pool and Council started exploring possible sites.
It was eventually decided to cover the existing pool and convert it to freshwater. The revamped facility reopened in 1983.
With the District's population now nearing 50,000, Raumati Pool no longer met the needs of the community and had become difficult to maintain.
The short gap between Raumati Pool closing and Coastlands Aquatic Centre opening is to enable pool staff familiarisation and training at the new centre.
