Rates rebates

Are you eligible for some help with your property rates?

We know paying rates is tough for some members of our community. If you're a low-income homeowner you you might be eligible for a Department of Internal Affairs property rates rebate subsidy of up to $610. Applications for the 2016/2017 funding round close on 30 June 2017, so now's a good time to get your application in.

Eligibility

Do you:

  • pay residential rates and were you living in your property on 1 July 2016
  • have a total gross household income for the tax year 31 March 2016 less than $35,000 a year (if you earn up to $42,000 you might qualify for a partial rebate if you have dependants, or if your property’s rates are high).

If you can answer yes, you might be eligible – here’s what you need to do:

  • Pick up an application form from your local Council Service Centre, or ask us to post one out to you.
  • Complete the form and bring it into a Council Service Centre to be processed. You’ll also need to bring proof of your income (before tax) for the tax year ended 31 March 2016 unless you’re on Government Superannuation only.

How can I find out more about the DIA rates rebate?

The Rates Rebate Scheme is run by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) and we support the scheme by processing applications.

Who can get a DIA rates rebate?

You can apply for a 2016-17 rates rebate if you were the legal ratepayer (your name should be on the rates bill) for the property where you were usually living on 1 July 2016.

The amount of the rebate you receive is based on your income level as well as the rates you pay and the number of dependants living with you. Use the Rates Rebate Entitlement calculator on the DIA website.

How do I know if I’m the legal ratepayer?

As the legal ratepayer of the property, you should have your name on the rates bill, and therefore have your name on the Rating Information Database (RID). As the legal ratepayer of the property you could either be the owner of the rating unit (property), or a lessee meeting certain criteria.

These criteria are set out in Sections 11(1)(b) and 11(2) of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 (LGRA). If your name isn’t on the RID and should be, please seek legal advice before applying for a rebate.

How much will I receive in my rates rebate?  
The maximum rebate available per household is $610.

How will I receive the rebate?

If you application is successful, the rebate will be paid as a credit to your rates account.

How often can I apply for a DIA rates rebate?

You can apply once during each rating year (1 July – 30 June). If you’re successful you can only receive one DIA rates rebate per rating year.

Are there other rates rebates or remissions I can apply for and can I apply for more than one?

We set aside up to $175,000 a year for property rates/water rates remissions. These are available to low-income earners and/or people facing financial hardship. For more information, visit our rates remissions page.
