Your Council

Town Centres and Connectors Transformation Project

We want our town centres to be vibrant, diverse and thriving - places where people want to spend their time and where they can access the services they need.

The Expressway is here and we need to ensure our two largest town centres, Paraparaumu and Waikanae, remain attractive places for people to do business, invest and spend time.

Since 2014 we’ve been working with the community, tāngata whenua, local businesses and others to develop a vision and plan for transforming our town centres. Budgets have been agreed through our FutureKāpiti Long term plan 2015-35 and we’re rolling out a 14 year programme of work.

Your town centre is the heart of your community

Our Goal

Our goal is to create vibrant, diverse and thriving town centres that are easily accessible, reflect the unique flavour of each town’s centre, attract visitors and investment alike, and have more people working locally in higher paid jobs.

Some of the work we are doing to transform our town centres intersects with our Stride n’ Ride Kāpiti Coast initiative and work to make the existing State Highway 1 a local road.

Exciting concepts for Waikanae and Paraparaumu town centres are contained within this section of the website.

In early 2017, we completed the first project – a shared pathway between Arawhata Road and Ngahina Street.

Coastlands new two-storey retail space, Takiri House, (adjoining Rimu Road) opened at the end of May 2017. The Council and Coastlands have been working together to share and align ideas for developments that will transform Rimu Road into the main street of Paraparaumu. (Click here to view Coastlands information.)

We are investigating plans for a signalised crossing on RImu Road to improve the connection between Coastlands and the civic precinct. (Click here for details on the crossing.)

Construction on improvements for the Kāpiti Lights area is well underway and is planned for completed at the end of October 2017. (Click here for more on the Kāpiti Lights improvements.)

We are investigating plans for improving the civic precinct.(Click here to view Civic Precinct information).
