Our District

Heritage

Heritage places are important in shaping the character of the Kāpiti Coast. They are part of what makes Kāpiti unique.

Kāpiti Coast District Council works to identify, protect and retain the district's heritage places to ensure they are retained for future generations.

Heritage places can include:

  • historic buildings (including structures)
  • ecological sites
  • geological sites
  • significant trees
  • waahi tapu.

The Heritage Register is considered a 'living' document with items added and monitored to ensure its effectiveness in identifying and protecting our heritage.

Archaeological Sites

The Historic Places Act 1993 and the Kāpiti Coast District Plan protects archaeological sites, which are 'any place associated with pre-1900 human activity, where there may be evidence relating to the history of New Zealand'.

If you are a contractor, earthmover, landscaper, developer or surveyor you should familiarise yourself with your legal requirements concerning such sites by reading Digging up the Past.
